Disaster Victims Are Not Political Pawns

California needs wildfire aid now—without partisan, anti-voter demands attached. Thousands of Southern Californians have lost their homes, livelihoods, and communities. What they need now is support—not partisan strings attached to their recovery.

President Trump is once again exploiting a crisis. He’s using the suffering of those affected by the Los Angeles fires as a tool to push his voter suppression agenda.

That’s right—he’s threatening to withhold aid to the thousands of Southern Californians who’ve lost their homes, livelihoods, and communities to wildfire unless the state government sides with him to deny thousands of voters’ rights by passing a voter ID law. This approach not only undermines democracy but also punishes those who are already enduring unimaginable hardship.

And unfortunately, his friends in Congress are falling in line. House Speaker Mike Johnson is refusing to commit to helping his fellow Americans in need if there isn’t something in it for his party.

This is unacceptable. Disaster relief should never be politicized. When communities are facing destruction and loss, they need empathy, not exploitation.

We urge leaders in Washington to prioritize doing what is right—without political demands. Californians need wildfire aid now. It’s time to put compassion and responsibility first.
