Opposition Grows on Voter ID Bill, Letter Sent to Legislators

Twenty-three voting rights and democracy groups have written a letter to Pennsylvania House Speaker Joanna McClinton and members of the General Assembly, urging them to reject House Bill 771, a voter ID proposal that risks disenfranchising eligible voters.

Twenty-three voting rights and democracy groups have written a letter to Pennsylvania House Speaker Joanna McClinton and members of the General Assembly, urging them to reject House Bill 771, a voter ID proposal that risks disenfranchising eligible voters.

The bill will institute new paperwork and voter ID requirements for in-person voting in all Pennsylvania elections. This bill would impose significant costs on already overburdened election administrators and state agencies while potentially disenfranchising voters. If passed, the bill would cause confusion and unnecessarily complicate the voter check-in process, resulting in longer lines at the polls.

Common Cause Pennsylvania was joined by 22 other organizations in signing onto the letter.

“The people are speaking with a clear voice. Our elections should be made more accessible, and this bill would make them less so. We encourage Representatives to reject House Bill 771 and to not disenfranchise eligible Pennsylvania voters,” said Philip Hensley-Robin, Executive Director of Common Cause Pennsylvania.
